Think Like a Job Seeker

Think Like a Job Seeker Through my years of working in the Talent Acquisition industry, I’ve come across many professionals who have varying views on how to attract and find the right talent.   Most professionals take a pray and post approach to finding talent.   Instead of thinking outside the box to find talent, they rely on the traditional job boards, applicant tracking system, career page, and brand recognition.   While having everything that I just mentioned is key to your employment branding and recruitment marketing strategy, you need more than that to attract passive job seekers.   Passive job seekers aren’t always on the hunt for their next role and typically don’t frequent the same spots that an active job seeker would. In order to stand out from the crowd, I recommend adding another dynamic to your current strategy.   Outside of the typical approach that most employers have, I encourage you to think like a job seeker.   To find the best talent, you need to reach out to them in a way that truly connects with them.   To do this, I recommend doing the following things: Facebook Groups Facebook may seem like a network that you frequent to chat with family and friends, but there’s so much untapped potential within the network.   Outside of the standard news feed, Facebook has many great professional job and industry-specific groups.   The groups can range from tech jobs, industry professional networking, remote workers, and many more!   On top of offering a wide variety of groups, the groups that you can discover are global, and not limited to your geographic location. Instagram While many professionals may write off this network, it’s definitely one that you should put on your list in 2019.   Outside of stories and filters, you can source and find some amazing talent.   The search capabilities on Instagram are very robust and user-friendly when it comes to finding talent based on location and skill set. Meetup.com The name may be deceiving, as it might come across as a dating site.   Don’t be fooled, as there’s loads of potential with Meetup.com.   If you’re looking for talent in your neck of the woods, you’ll want to add it to your strategy.   Meetup.com is global and offers thousands of professional and social groups.   Whether you’re looking to find a Full Stack Engineer or interact with Java users, this site offers it all.   You can engage with users via the message board, email, and attend meetups.   It’s a great way to source new talent, talk shop, or sponsor a group to increase your brand awareness. Industry Specific Sites To truly find the best passive talent out there, you need to play on the same playground that they’re playing on.   In the tech field, a lot of the talent that you’re looking for doesn’t just spend their days on LinkedIn or Indeed.   Consider adding the following sites to your strategy: Stack Overflow The world’s most trusted developer resource. If the world’s top developers are on here and you’re in need of a developer, you have no reason not to invest in it.   Stack Overflow offers great talent attraction, the ability to post jobs, company pages, and great sourcing capabilities.   Unlike other job boards, you can’t Boolean Search from a search engine to find the great talent on Stack Overflow. GitHub Another great option to add to your strategy. While not as robust as Stack Overflow, GitHub still offers you the ability to post jobs.   One plus side to GitHub is that you can source talent for free.   It allows you to be very granular in your search, narrowing it down to tech stack and location. Dribbble Unlike Stack Overflow and GitHub, Dribbble is king when it comes to finding the top UX/UI talent. Dribbble allows you to source talent, post meetups/hiring events, post open jobs, and create a company page. In conclusion, if you want to find the top talent, you need to be where the top talent is at.   The only way to do that is to think like a job seeker. The Dos and Donts of Finding a Job When Youre in One

The Dos and Donts of Finding a Job When Youre in One Looking for a new job when you are already employed can be tricky. It can be incredibly time consuming and when youre working full time you may feel like this is time that you just dont have. Its also important that  you keep your job search below the radar, as you dont want to jeopardise your current position by giving your  boss reason to  suspect that you are considering jumping ship. There are ways to get around these obstacles however and in the same way there are things that you should avoid doing. Here are a few dos and donts that you should follow when searching for a job when you already have one. 1) DO update your LinkedIn profile. Dont be afraid of updating your LinkedIn profile in case your boss notices. LinkedIn is not solely good for finding a new job, as creating and maintaining your professional network can be beneficial for business in a number of ways. If you are worried, however, you can change your settings so that changes made to your profile are not broadscasted to your network. Keeping your profile complete and up to date will optimise your chance of being approached by a recruiter about suitable roles, so its worth doing well. 2) DONT talk to colleagues about your job hunt. You may have struck up a good friendship with your colleagues and feel like you trust them to keep your intentions quiet, but you never know who they might tell and you dont want the news to spread around the whole office! You may also find that colleagues wont involve you as much in upcoming projects, etc. at work once they know that you plan to change job. 3) DO schedule interviews during non-work hours. If possible, try to organise your job interviews outside of working hours. This way it wont disrupt your current job and you wont have to come up with a feasible excuse to duck out of work for a couple of hours. Hopefully if you explain to your prospective employer that you would like to keep your job hunt a secret they will understand and be able to accommodate to your needs. If you are unable to fit an interview in  before or after work, you may want to consider using a days holiday, as you will lose any leftover days once your leave the job anyway. 4)  DONT dress differently to normal. If you normally dress pretty casually for work, its probably going to look a little bit strange if one day you rock up in a suit and tie. If you have an interview before or after work, make sure you have a change of clothes with you so that you do not raise suspicions. 5) DO network. Referrals are highly valued when hiring and therefore creating and maintaining a network of industry contacts can come in very helpful when you are seeking a new role. Reconnect with old contacts and let them know that you are looking for a new role, as they may be able to help you out. Another option is to attend events that are relevant to your area to work and meet new people within the industry. 6) DONT search when you are at work. If you start searching for a new job while you are at work, youre just asking to get caught! A lot of companies monitor their employees internet use, emails and phone calls, so make sure that you use your own personal phone for calls related to your job hunt. Its also not very ethical to apply for jobs within working hours, as your employer is paying you to do a job within this time, so stick to your free time. 7) DONT post your resume on a job board. Its possible that someone from your organisation will see your resume on one of these job board and will then know that you are looking. If you would like to keep your job hunt quiet, by all means apply for roles found on job boards, however avoid setting up a job seekers profile. 8)  DONT mention your job search on social media. Social media can be a great place to learn about vacancies and to expand your network, but  try not to reveal that you are looking for a new job on any of your social media accounts as it could easily fall upon the wrong set of eyes. The same goes for having a rant about work in a moment of frustration! 9)  DO give appropriate notice in writing. Once you have found a new role, make sure that you give the necessary notice that is stated in your contract. Let your boss know that you will do your best to make your departure go as smoothly as possible and help to train your replacement. 10) DO leave in a professional manner. Even if youve not had a particularly good time in a company and are glad to see the back of it, you should do your best to handle your departure with professionalism and dignity, as you never know when you may want to call on them for a reference or business proposition in future, so you dont want to burn any bridges by leaving on a negative note. I have to re-arrange the kitchen cabinets

I have to re-arrange the kitchen cabinets Procrastinating comes with the territory. Sometimes it is too hard to do what we know we should be doing. When Iran a job seeker group and I was amazed at how many men would describe their weekly activities included reorganizing the kitchen cabinets. They probably hadnt shown a lot of interest in that before, however, there was a greater feeling of accomplishment in doing that than picking up the phone and calling a referral or following up with a recruiter. It has been said that finding a job is a full-time job (and perhaps the worst job you will ever have, sorry). But do you really know how much time you are spending and how? When I was unemployed, yes, it happens to all of us, I would wake up, take a shower, get dressed and then pour a cup of coffee while I watched the morning news. The next thing I knew, Oprah was on.(FYI, Oprah airs at 4:00 pm).How did this happen?I was scared and didnt have a plan and didnt knowwhat else I should be doing. Keep track of how you spend your day.Once you understand where your time and energyare being spent, you will beable to better adjustyour efforts. Here is a Productivity Chart Download productivity_chart.xls You can use it to record time, pieces of correspondence and networking contacts. This will help you clearly understand where your efforts are strong and where they need to be improved.

What Separates Winners from Everyone Else

What Separates Winners from Everyone Else Have you ever noticed that some people win more often than others? They seem to get what they want. They get great projects to work on, new opportunities, public recognition. They tend to make more money. They achieve their life goals. Of course, we feel happy for them. But have you ever wondered what they do to be so successful? And what do they do to keep winning year after year? What do people do to be so successful? I used to think it was because those people were smarter, better at office politics, more confident, better at communicating, and willing to spend more time practicing than I was prepared to, especially when our children were young. All those things were true in some cases. But those weren’t the only explanation. We all know: The straight-A student who never made it beyond a certain point The smooth operator who topped out because he lacked substance The classmate whose career went sideways because his confidence tipped into arrogance It’s impossible to win consistently by picking just one skill or aspect and relying on that, because things are constantly changing. Your job, people’s expectations of you, what’s needed by your clients, and the landscape around you, just to name a few. That’s why none of my previous assumptions were correct. What separates the winners from everyone else The single most important difference between winners and everyone else is this: the people who win are constantly learning and growing. They’re investing in themselves. When they make a mistake, they extract the lessons and improve for the next times. When they face adversity, they seek guidance and ask for help. When they see opportunities to learn from others, they invest the time and energy to do it. This is what keeps winners at the leading edge. This is what kept me rising through my 24-year career, through 10 roles, to ultimately become COO of Morgan Stanley Europe. When you continue to learn, it keeps you fresh, interested (and interesting) and backable. If you’re not learning, growing and moving forward, you’ll be left behind. Because the rest of the world isn’t stopping. It’s surging ahead. Invest in yourself So, what investments are you making in yourself this year? Why not create a budget for the amount of time, energy and money you plan to put into yourself? This will be magical because the investments you make in yourself are always worthwhile â€" it’s totally portable no matter where you go in your career (and life)! Investing in yourself is always worthwhile â€" it’s totally portable no matter where you go in your career and life For example, I’m setting aside 30 minutes each day to read a chapter from a book or watch video from courses I’ve signed up for. And I’ve set aside a personal development budget to take my career and business to the next level. What about you? What are you excited about learning? How about developing your personal brand or how to influence people? Will that help you achieve your goals this year? Or how to find great mentors and sponsors who can open doors to more opportunities for you? Or what you need to do to win that next promotion? A great place to learn, grow and invest in yourself If you’re looking for a place to start learning, growing and investing in yourself, I highly recommend Career Masteryâ„¢ Kickstart 2018, which starts on Tuesday, January 16th.
